What is your Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) account, and how do you access it?

1–2 minutes

Every single person should log onto their CRA account (at least once a year), as it provides important information on: TFSA contribution room, RRSP contribution and deduction limits, and notices you may have received via online mail.

Here is a quick little how-to on how to register and log in to your account.

PART ONE: IF YOU HAVE NEVER LOGGED ON BEFORE, KEEP READING. IF YOU HAVE, SKIP THIS PART.

Here is the link to sign in to the wonderfully depressing site that is the CRA: Sign in to your CRA account – Canada.ca. Once you click “Register” it provides step-by-step instructions on how to register for a CRA account. Take a brief glance at the “What you need to have ready” drop down before starting, so you don’t get halfway through and get frustrated because you can’t find you prior year tax return… Follow the instructions as needed, and you will be registered! Note, if you have not filed your tax return in the past two years, you cannot access your CRA account.

PART TWO: IF YOU HAVE LOGGED ON BEFORE OR JUST REGISTERED.

At the same link, click one of the sign in options: Sign in to your CRA account – Canada.ca.

If you are once-a-yearer, then you can just use a sign in partner (such as your bank).

If you are a regular logger-iner like me, then you can set up a username and password.

Once you log in, you will be taken to your main homepage. Just scroll down to find your TFSA contribution limit and your RRSP deduction limit – these are important! Read this blog post for more details.

On the left-hand side you can also take a look at your mail. CRA transitioned to an online-mail only system, so you can view all of your online mail (such as previous notices of assessments).
